Random thoughts and musings from the Commish following week 2.

What a difference a week makes!  Or does it?

Another tie, more upsets and unexpected winners as well as some familiar names on top – with one very notable exception.  Who is the exception you ask?  Let me tell you…it is one Sandra Jo Reed!  Came back in kicking an screaming this year and is already singing with Johnny Cash!  More on this later, but suffice it to say…congratulations Sandy and welcome back!

Good to see the women of the family rising to the top.  Kare, Peggy and Robyn coming in second last week, and Angi and Jill this week.  Look out one and all, there could be some new sheriff’s in town this year!

As for me, the week found football on the back burner.  The Giants managed to take two from the Rox, which I admit was difficult to watch, as I truly wanted the Rox to get off to a good start on this road trip; but I still held out hope for the LA series.  Oops.  Fast forward through that Dodger series and we all know the result.  So, now it is time to play catch up and find some bats!  You could not have asked for better starting pitching overall through the first two series’ of this road trip, so come on guys…find your bats and let’s get the arms some runs!

Question:  Does anyone care about the Broncos anymore?  Aside from my sister Deb, who along with her husband Johnny D plan their Sunday’s around the Bronco games, I have noticed a very distinct difference in the interest level re: the Broncos amongst my family and friends.  They tune in if they have a fantasy player on their roster playing for the Broncos, otherwise it is a case of “I will tune in if I have nothing better to do.”  Is that true of all sports?  I think to a degree, yes, but I want to take a minute to say there is still nothing better at generating a sense of community and creating emotion than sports.  As such, a reminder.  Don’t let the “noise” written by many of today’s journalists (loosely labeled) take away from your enjoyment of the pure skill and athleticism of our pro sports, nor the athletes that play the games.  There are still good men and women in the world of sports, and if you are interested in reading about a few of them…people that see the bigger picture and want to use sports in their own way to create a better world…check out “The Sports Reformers – Working to Make the World of Sports a Better Place.”

(Full disclosure…that was a shameless plug for my Bro and longtime partner…so sue me!  :-))

Bro, I love you man…and I look forward to reading your stuff, even when you are clearly wrong!  Keep challenging the “it’s always been that way mentality in all you do!”

Back to the task at hand.  As mentioned earlier, singing with Johnny Cash this week are Sandy and Tom, with 11 wins a piece.  It is getting a bit too familiar seeing Uncle Tom’s name at the top of the leader board; and knowing him, he has devised an algorithm to successfully predict probabilities of success for each team.  So…the moral of that story is…we all need to up our games or we run the risk of seeing him take the top prize again this year!

In a large group, all tied for second with 10 wins each are Angelo, Angi, Danny, JB, Jill, John, and Ken.  Well done, but you need not look far to find the rest of the pack, who are all chasing fast and hard!  Footsteps…do you hear them coming?

Cumulative standings have Angelo on top with 23 wins, Uncle Tom in second with 22 wins and Danny in third with 21 wins.  It is way to early to be spending winnings, so keep it up guys and we’ll see where we land in 15 weeks!

As for the week’s downside, we lost 3 more from Riley C. contention this week.  Mats and Peggy exited with 7 wins for the week; and Sumi checked in to the Heartbreak Hotel with 6 wins…which meant she found herself drowning her sorrows in the Elvis Lounge.  Remember what I said to Sissy last week, if you are going to go out, you may as well go out early, and if you have to lose…you may as well enjoy an Elvis song or two with your adult beverage of choice!

Sidebar clarification:  In addition to the tie rule, this is a good time to remind everyone of another executive ruling made last year.  If you do happen to exit the Riley C. competition, you are able to play your way back in with a perfect week.  We have never had a perfect week since the inception of our competition, but several have been close and it remains very much in play.  Should you score a perfect week, and still be in the Riley C. competition, your “get back in” chip follows you until used.  That means it will carry over from week to week and year to year as well until used.

Please let Angelo or me know of any issues you are having with the league, summary updates, ideas for the blog, whatever, and we will put them front and center.  Fun is the name of the game and remember, you use fewer muscles to smile than you do to frown!  Find a smile and give it to your neighbor!

Hugs and love to all!
